Bitcoin has risen exponentially in recent months, and the sale of digital art and assets is a frequent topic in the news. Understanding digital currencies and their ‘origin story’ can help us conceptualize and prepare for what the future of money might look like, said Brad Chandler, director of the Nicholas Center for Corporate Finance and Investment Banking at the Wisconsin School of Business, during a recent virtual event. Cryptocurrencies ultimately affect all of us, not just those in the finance world.
“I encourage everyone to lean in and learn more because I believe that in society, we’re going to have to make a decision,” Chandler said. “We’re going to have to decide: In what ways are these cryptocurrencies going to move forward? How are we going to regulate them? I think we, the collective we, will play a big part in that, either through consumer adoption—will we really use these and make them more a part of our daily life—or through the political process. Will we elect leaders that want to regulate these cryptocurrencies or not?”
Chandler shared these and other insights during the virtual series, “The UW Now Livestream: The Future of Money.”
He was joined by Dana Peterson (MS ’02), chief economist and center leader of economy, strategy, and finance with the nonprofit research organization, The Conference Board.
