We are excited to highlight Shivani Rao and her journey with MSBA as our student spotlight feature this week!

Shivani Rao, 2026 MSBA Candidate

Shivani discovered her passion for data analytics early on and received her Bachelor of Technology in Computer Engineering degree with an Honors in Data Science and Analytics from K.J. Somaiya in Mumbai, India. Her undergraduate studies and internship experiences provided opportunities to work on data visualization, machine learning, and web application projects that built her solid foundation of technical knowledge. Inspired to use her skillset to make a difference, Shivani discovered UW Madison’s Master’s of Business Analytics program and decided to make a move to the Midwest. “The program’s focus on using data to drive decisions and solve real-world problems really stood out to me. It felt like the perfect next step to grow my skills and understand how analytics can create real business impact.”

Opportunity Knocks

Shivani has already found there to be no shortage of opportunities to engage in applied learning through the program. “Working with classmates to analyze data, build models, and present insights has helped me connect what we learn in class to real business situations,” Shivani shares. But the hands-on learning doesn’t end there. “I love the immersion trips; they’re such a great way to see how analytics is used in real-world settings.” Throughout November, MSBA students had the option to spend a day immersing themselves in an organization’s culture and put the skills they learn in the classroom into action working on a mini project with the company’s data. Smaller groups of students allow for interaction with executives and make the experience truly meaningful for both students and organizations.

The Importance of Support

Collaboration and communication are strongly emphasized in the classroom as they play an instrumental role in turning data into actionable insights. Shivani notes some of the most valuable learning opportunities she has had so far have been projects leveraging teamwork. On the program’s people and professors, she shares that “everyone is super supportive, approachable and always willing to help.” Shivani looks forward to applying her adaptable skillset after graduation and is aspiring to work as a business analyst, either in consulting or the retail industry. Tapping into the community of support behind her, she notes that “the career coaches have been incredibly helpful in guiding me through different career paths and helping me figure out where my interests align.”

Keep an Open Mind

As a first time Madison resident, Shivani has embraced everything the city has to offer from the lively downtown dining and entertainment, to the scenery of lake Mendota and the Northern Lights. For future MSBA Badgers, Shivani encourages being committed to trying new things and approaching everything with an open mind. She mentions that the program is already flying by and advises future students to “take full advantage of the resources, support, and opportunities provided, whether it’s career coaching, immersion trips or networking with peers” while they have the chance.

The program is thrilled to have you, Shivani, and we wish you all the best for the rest of your MSBA experience and beyond!
