No! You don’t need to have a business-related degree or professional work experience to earn an MBA or a business master’s degree.

Wisconsin has an MBA or business master’s program for you to meet your career goals, regardless of your undergraduate degree and major.

Some graduate programs have specific prerequisites and degree requirements. Visit each program’s admissions page for more information.

An MBA is a graduate-level degree that stands for a master’s in business administration. In an MBA program, you gain a holistic view of business, find your leadership style, and grow your skills in strategic decision-making, business management, and leadership. An MBA is ideal for career advancement or career switching.

You need professional work experience before earning an MBA.

Wisconsin offers full-time, professional, and executive MBAs.

Specialized business master’s degrees—such as business analytics, real estate, and finance—offer focused training for specific career paths and goals. Wisconsin offers a wide variety of specialized business master’s programs.

You can earn a master’s degree right after your bachelor’s or gain professional work experience first and return to school.

Whether it’s a master’s degree or an MBA, Wisconsin offers business programs that will match your experience level and career ambitions.

Admissions requirements for Wisconsin business graduate programs vary by program. All master’s and MBA programs require a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution, official transcripts, and a completed application.

Some master’s programs have specific prerequisites and degree requirements. There are no work requirements for Wisconsin’s business master’s programs.

The Global Real Estate Master is only available to non-U.S. students.

Wisconsin’s MBA programs require work experience (at least two years for the professional and full-time MBAs; and at least 10 years, five in a leadership role, for the executive MBA).

Visit each program’s admissions page for admissions requirements and possible prerequisites.

This depends on the degree, program, and where you completed your bachelor’s degree.

Visit each program’s admissions page for information on standardized test scores.

For many business graduate programs, the GMAT and GRE are optional if you earned an accredited U.S. undergraduate degree. The full-time and part-time MBAs also require at least two years of professional work experience to not submit a standardized test score. For most programs, you must submit a test waiver if you’re not submitting a test score.

If your undergraduate performance doesn’t fully reflect your potential or you had a GPA of 3.0 or lower, consider taking the GMAT or GRE. A strong test score will boost your application and demonstrate you can succeed in the program.

For international students applying to most business graduate programs, a TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo score is required. The requirement can be waived if you have an undergraduate or master’s degree that was taught in English.

The cost of an MBA or business master’s degree depends on the program and applicant. Some programs have resident and non-resident tuition, while others have one tuition rate.

At Wisconsin, we work hard to make earning a graduate degree affordable.

Generous support from our alumni and friends enables the Wisconsin School of Business to award merit-based aid each year. When you apply, you are automatically considered for merit aid.

Other ways students offset program costs include:

  • Scholarships, with some programs guaranteeing a scholarship to every student enrolled.
  • Graduate assistantships (teaching, research, or project assistantship positions) that offer stipends and health insurance. Assistantships are not available in all graduate programs.
  • Federal student aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Employer assistance in the form of financial scholarship, limited work travel, and/or time off. If you’re working while earning your graduate degree or you’re employed and plan to enroll in a graduate program, consider asking your employer for support. Employers benefit from their investment in talent development.
  • Credit for undergraduate coursework. In Wisconsin’s MS in Business Analytics program, current University of Wisconsin–Madison students can take up to 6 credits in qualifying courses during their senior year to reduce their course load and tuition. The Wisconsin Professional MBA Program offers accelerated options for qualifying WSB undergraduate alumni to waive up to 14 credits of MBA curriculum requirements to reduce the money and time needed to complete the program.

Visit each program’s tuition and aid page for more information.
