Alex Bisset takes a culture-first approach to leadership at Barclays

With a work ethic honed by late nights in Grainger Hall and early mornings on Lake Mendota, former student rower Alex Bisset (BBA ’08) hustled to become one of the youngest managing directors in the history of his company, Barclays.

With a steady presence, deep technical expertise, and a knack for developing innovative solutions for Barclays clients, Alex has transformed the company’s convertibles sales division into one of its most profitable units—but is even prouder of the strong work culture he’s built among his team.

“The most important thing for me is making sure people feel comfortable at work and are happy coming in each day,” he says.

Additionally, throughout his more than 15 years at Barclays, he’s worked to enhance the pipeline of Badgers being recruited to the company through internships and full-time positions. “Everyone from Wisconsin who comes into Barclays has that hunger and that intellectual curiosity,” he says. “They’re very professional, they’re asking sharp questions, and they’re working extremely hard.”

Outside of work, Alex is a busy father of three and a published author. He chronicled his unique journey into parenthood in a 2022 book, The Destination Birth, which tells the story of his daughter’s premature arrival and experience in a Montana neonatal intensive care unit thousands of miles from home.
