Most people do not change which college they are attending during their undergraduate studies three times, then once settled decide to change their major three more times. I did, though! I have always felt drawn to the arts but was prone to letting other peoples’ opinions sway which direction I was headed.
In high school I had the great opportunity to work with an incredible composer from the Madison area; Brent Michael Davids. After about a year of working together nearly every week, I had a cute little composition named Epiphany for the Civic Symphony of Green Bay to practice and perform. This collaboration inspired me to go to college for music and changed my life forever.
After settling in at UW-Madison, and switching from a composition major to a music education major to finally earning my actual degree in saxophone performance, I realized that I still had not discovered what I was meant to do. I was performing, but it was not entirely my thing. I was teaching, but I wanted to do even more. Then, I learned about the Bolz Center from a friend who was currently in the Master of Arts-Business: Arts and Creative Enterprise Leadership program. It was at that point that I felt like everything clicked.
I love to manage things and discovered a passion for organizing trips and events through my time as the Founder and President of the Madison Saxophone Club, a campus organization that I am so proud to have been a part of. I still did not have an idea of what I was going to do with my life after college, but hearing about the Bolz Center truly felt like, well, an epiphany. Now, a production intern at LunART for my Applied Learning Placement, I can continue to use my skills of planning and managing events while contributing to a cause I love so dearly: promoting women in the arts. I know I want to continue teaching, and I hope to for my entire life. But now, I will also have the skills I need to reach others with my knowledge, passion, and talent. I am likely going to continue to change what I do more times ahead, and thankfully the Bolz Center is giving me the tools and support to be successful wherever I find myself.
