The Weinert Center for Entrepreneurship is proud to announce the induction of Steve Goldberg into its Hall of Fame.

A seasoned entrepreneur and dedicated mentor, Steve Goldberg’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to leadership, risk-taking, and giving back. As a graduate of the UW-Madison’s Wisconsin School of Business, Steve earned his Bachelor of Business degree in 1979 with a double major in Finance, Investment and Banking and Business Management.
Steve began his career at Edward Jones, where he spent over three decades helping to grow the firm from 400 financial advisors to more than 13,000. During his time there, he became one of the youngest general partners in the company’s history. While the role provided significant leadership opportunities, Steve found himself drawn to a more entrepreneurial path. He made the bold decision to step away and pursue his long-held dream of building something on his own.
This pursuit led to the start of Benchmark Securities, a brokerage firm he built along with his business partner. What started during a challenging economic period soon grew into a thriving enterprise. Today, the firm offers multiple products, employs a team of nearly 20, and generates close to $25 million in revenue. Reflecting on his journey, Steve emphasizes the importance of understanding risk: “You need to understand the risk that allows you to sleep at night before you do anything. And that is not something you learn from a textbook.”
Beyond his professional success, Steve is especially passionate about mentoring young professionals, often working with individuals early in their careers as they seek to take their next step. In fact, a couple were young Badgers like himself. His advice centers on communication and curiosity. “If you can’t meaningfully articulate your vision, it’s hard to get people to follow you,” he explains.
For Steve, being inducted into the Weinert Center Hall of Fame is both an honor and a reflection of the relationships and impact he has built over time. “I do what I do because I love to give back… and to get this kind of recognition for living what I set out to do is very special,” he shares.

As a passionate Badger, Steve has dedicated his time to mentoring and giving back to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has participated in numerous Distinguished Entrepreneurs Lunch Programs and has supported the Weinert Center as a Forward Partner. He notes, “I often say that giving back has done more for me than it’s done for the organization… I can’t tell you the number of people I have met and the things I get to be a part of. It is so fulfilling.”
For Steve, his connection to Wisconsin began early and have remained ever since. Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Steve recalls, “I made one visit to Wisconsin and said, ‘I am going here.’” His story emphasizes the true force of UW-Madson and the lifelong relationships and impact that follows.

His induction celebrates not only a successful entrepreneurial career but also a legacy defined by generosity, mentorship, and a deep connection to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Congratulations, Steve!
