One way the Wisconsin School of Business’ Master of Science in Business Analytics program upholds its five pillars is through various experiential learning opportunities for students to build on their knowledge outside of the classroom. Lunch & Learns with industry professionals serve as an invaluable opportunity for students to hear from experts on the latest trends, in-demand skills and how to differentiate themselves in the job market.
This semester, the MSBA program had the privilege of hosting Chun Schiros, PhD, Chief Analytics Officer for Associated Bank. Dr. Schiros has an extensive background in developing data-driven strategies and innovation in various leadership roles, receiving many awards, some of which include being recognized in both the 2023 and 2024 “Global Top 100 Innovators in Data and Analytics” by Corinium Global Intelligence as well as being featured in “The Most Powerful Women in Banking: Next 2023” by American Banker Magazine. Listening to her professional story left students feeling inspired and eager to embark on their own paths.
Representing Associated Bank’s Core Values
Before diving into Dr. Schiros’ inspiring career journey, Abigail Sabinash, Talent Attraction Consultant, AVP, shared the core values that drive Associated Bank. These values, deeply embedded in the company’s daily operations, set the foundation for the culture Dr. Schiros exemplifies in her work. The organization embodies a “relentless focus on people,” including its clients and employees; a “winning spirit” to foster continuous improvement; a “listen then act” mindset, prioritizing data-driven insights on target needs first; and a goal of “achieving together,” fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment where everyone celebrates the company wins. As the largest Wisconsin-based bank with nearly 200 branch locations throughout the Midwest, Associated Bank has earned its trusted reputation through a deep dedication to these values.
Pathway to Success
Prior to banking, Dr. Schiros explained she never anticipated being in the financial sector. With a lifelong passion for math, computers, and physics, she began her journey with a bachelor’s degree in communication engineering before attending Auburn University where she received a master’s degree in probability and statistics, as well as a master’s and a PhD in electrical engineering. During this experience, she was a research scientist at Alabama Birmingham Hospital, specifically working in the cardiology department using data and technology to support surgeries and patient care. Dr. Schiros reflects on how she initially believed healthcare was her passion, intending to use her talent for working with data to drive positive change within the medical community. It was not until a connection of hers recommended she apply for a position in the banking industry that she explored the nuances of this entirely opposite world.
The vast difference between these two industries required the transition to accompany a dedication to continuous learning and adaptation to the technicalities of finance. She explains this involved obtaining various certifications and raising her hand to take on any initiative available. The driving force behind her successful career progression can be attributed to her love for data and desire to make an impact.
Following over nine years of extensive industry experience, Dr. Schiros joined Associated Bank as the Chief Analytics Officer. In this role, she spearheads data driven initiatives that align the bank’s strategies with customer needs. To do this, she leverages tools like cloud infrastructure, AWS, Python and more. Committed to developing the next generation of leaders, she also aims to lead a self-sustaining team.
“Change Is the Only Constant”
As the tools designed to help analysts explore the vast array of data available evolve consistently, Dr. Schiros emphasizes that “change is the only constant.” Being able to adapt quickly and innovate helps her tap into the growth potential the world of data analytics holds. Currently, numerical data is collected and analyzed to drive business decisions and strategies, but other forms of data such as image, video, and voice have yet to realize their potential, indicating that “the sky is the limit for what we can do.” With a high demand for modelers to join the banking industry, it is vital that students embrace their unique perspective and leverage their willingness to adapt to change quickly with a strong curiosity for exploration.
To current and future MSBA students, she advises to “be a lifelong learner and have a drive to be excellent.” Staying focused on your passion and being ready to learn anything will contribute to success in any industry. Doing a respectable job at your work is only one piece of the puzzle, with the other being a focus on forming meaningful connections and building a network of people who will advocate for your professional development.
With valuable takeaways from an insightful discussion with Dr. Schiros, UW-MSBA students experienced the program’s commitment to nurturing a well-rounded foundation as they prepare to become leaders in data analytics.
