The Fall 2025 semester brought meaningful academic growth, strong community involvement, and new opportunities for members of the Risk Management and Insurance Society (RMIS). We’re thankful to the industry professionals, alumni, guest speakers, and faculty who contributed their time and expertise throughout the semester. Their support allowed our students to engage in valuable experiences and further develop their professional skills.

At the start of the semester, 20 students attended the Chicagoland Risk Forum, a conference focused on industry education and professional networking. Students explored topics such as large-loss response, risks associated with AI, weather-related exposures, and strategies for effective risk mitigation. Shortly after, students participated in the Risk and Insurance Career Fair, which featured representatives from more than 70 companies and provided a platform to connect with professionals and learn about a wide range of careers in risk and insurance.

In addition, RMIS hosted a variety of social and speaker events to support both professional growth and community building. Members connected informally at our Halloween Social, decorating mini pumpkins and engaging with peers during the busy midterm period. On the professional side, RMIS partnered with the Real Estate Club to host representatives from Northmarq, who shared insights on trends in property insurance and their impact on real estate transactions. Together, these events allowed students to network, gain practical knowledge, and actively engage with both the club and the industry.

Four RMIS students also represented the club at the inaugural RISC Summit + InsurTech Innovation Challenge, hosted by the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business. The team –   consisting of Rachel Gibson, Devin Mehta, Lanya Yu, and Nicholas Sevcik – earned first place with a pitch on leveraging telematics in cyber risk. Their approach aimed to provide underwriters with better visibility into enterprise business applications, improving premium pricing and helping limit losses. Additionally, 19 members participated in our second career trek, which took place in Chicago, IL. They met with professionals from Marsh, AIG, and Aon through group discussions and networking lunches. The trek offered students a chance to explore diverse career paths in underwriting and brokerage and learn about specialty lines such as aviation and group captives. We are especially thankful to the Spencer Educational Foundation for covering travel and lodging, making these experiences accessible to our members.

Ultimately, we’re proud to reflect on another successful semester of collaboration, development, and achievement. With the support of our community and members, we look forward to expanding RMIS and continuing to create opportunities for our students.
