I grew up with the stage. Since the age of six, I started learning folk dance and continued joining dance groups in every school I attended, which created a deep and lasting bond with the stage. However, I gradually realized that I might never be capable enough to stand on the stage as a professional dancer, which frustrated me for a period of time. This realization shifted my dream into helping more artists stand on the stage and deliver the power of their work.
During college, I majored in Cultural Industry Management and dedicated myself to stage art. In one opportunity, I had the chance to edit a video for my dance group about fighting against the pandemic. When I saw how the members were excited watching repeatedly and sharing it on social media, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction and happiness from their positive emotions. After that, I actively took on many filming and editing tasks to help others document their work and genuine feelings.
A chance to participate in an exchange program at UC San Diego strengthened my desire to pursue a master’s degree in the United States as it enabled me to experience a more diverse and vibrant environment. Here nonprofit arts organizations are highly developed and widely supported by the public. For this reason, I chose to study Art Administration at the Business School at UW-Madison, where I could learn how these organizations are sustained by financial stability and community support.
Studying at the Bolz Center is an ideal opportunity for my personal growth. In the past three months, the courses have helped me build a comprehensive understanding of how arts organizations stick to a strong sense of mission. I learned how to evaluate the development of the nonprofit organization, and how different leadership styles shape an organization’s overall atmosphere. I also gained new insights into how to deliver the power of art in ways that are economically sustainable. These represent only a part of what I have gained here, and they are becoming the foundational steps that guide me toward my long-term aspiration.
At the same time, the opportunity to complete my Applied Learning Placement at PBS Wisconsin has been an incredible learning experience. I am able to observe how a mature program operates across different roles and resources, and how a large media organization integrates various projects while consistently moving forward with a consistent mission.
Being able to study in the Bolz Center has been truly meaningful. It is providing me with real-world experience that strengthens my determination to help more people realize their stage dreams and to continue carrying forward the artistic power.
