Throughout my life, my grand life plans have never gone accordingly. I started my undergraduate education thinking that I would be an elementary school teacher with a French minor. Within a year of my undergrad that plan changed and I decided that I liked theater and that would work as my minor. As I continued through my undergrad, my love of theater grew and I ended up making theater one of my majors knowing that I wanted to combine my love of theater and my love of education together.
After I graduated, I was ready to find work within the theater education realm. Though I was able to do some teaching, I knew that I also had a love for directing and wanted any type of professional theater experience I could get. This took another twist in my life as I started my time with American Players Theatre (APT) and also spent time at the National Theater Institute. Both of these companies allowed for learning experiences and for me to see that I still loved teaching and directing on a level, but the reason that I loved it was for my passion of seeing something grow. This then provided the next twist which was discovering my love of arts administration.
This new twist of life led me to applying to the Bolz Center, thinking I was not going to be accepted, leading me to another twist when I was. I knew I had a basic knowledge of arts administration from when I worked at APT as their administrative assistant. The catch is through all the twists that I had in life I could have never imagined how it led me to gaining the knowledge to be able to be in the Bolz Center. With the Bolz Center, I know that I am now gaining the knowledge to continue to move forward within the arts and cultural sectors.
This year, I am completing an Applied Learning Placement with Children’s Theater of Madison. This placement has allowed for me to continue growing through helping them start to plan for their 60th anniversary. Working with the children’s theater was a new twist, as it has allowed for me to be able to work in a company that supports the theater education of youth but allows for me to push myself within project management. Through this I continue to grow my knowledge of arts administration to work to make the 60th anniversary a success.
After I graduate, I am hoping that the next step in my career continues to combine my past with the present. I know that I will continue to have twists in my future and I am excited to see where they will take me as all of the past twists have led me to where I am now.
