This past January, during the final week of Winter Break, a group of 22 ambitious first-year students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison embarked on the first-ever all-freshman career trek to San Francisco, organized by the UW Business Connect and the StartUp Learning Communities.. This immersive experience offered students a behind-the-scenes look at some of the world’s most innovative companies and a chance to connect with Badger alumni who are shaping the future of business.

The trek included visits to industry-leading organizations such as Google, Bloomberg Beta, Yurts AI, Irrational Labs, and TPG Capital. Students engaged with founders and company leaders, gaining firsthand insights into emerging technologies, venture capital, and behavioral economics. The trip served as a valuable introduction to the dynamic and fast-paced startup ecosystem of Northern California, providing students with real-world perspectives beyond the classroom.
These dedicated alumni professionals shared career advice, industry trends, and personal experiences, demonstrating how a Wisconsin education can translate into success on a global stage.
A key takeaway for students was the interdisciplinary nature of entrepreneurship, with discussions covering topics such as AI-driven solutions, investment strategies, and the future of financial technology. By visiting both established giants like Google and cutting-edge startups such as Yurts AI, students witnessed the diverse pathways available in the startup and corporate worlds.
All the students who were accepted to participate in this fully-funded trek expressed their deep appreciation for the industry leaders who took the time to share their expertise, including Kristen Berman, Ben Van Roo, Kendall Garrison, Jenna Laszlo, Bharat Kanodia, and Shaun Aukland. Their mentorship and willingness to engage with students helped to clarify career goals and inspire new ways of thinking.

This first-year trek marks a significant step forward in entrepreneurial education at UW-Madison, demonstrating the power of hands-on experiences in shaping the next wave of business leaders and innovators — whether near the Golden Gate Bridge or on the Madison Isthmus.
