As the summer begins, Risk Management & Insurance Society (RMIS) reflects on a successful spring semester. which has been a testament to our growing community of kind, engaged students that share interests in the field of risk management and insurance.
Mentorship Kickoff
This spring, we held our first official mentorship kickoff. This program pairs upper-level students with new students, providing guidance, industry insights, and new friends to those beginning their RMIS journey. Our mentorship program saw an unprecedented level of interest this semester, with 24 mentees signing up, marking an all-time high for RMIS.
RISKWORLD National Conference
In May, fourteen RMIS members had the opportunity to attend the RISKWORLD national conference in San Diego. This event brought together industry professionals from across the nation, offering a unique platform for networking, learning, and discussing the latest trends and challenges in risk management and insurance. We had multiple conversations with friends of Wisconsin and Wisconsin alumni at companies like Munich Re, Marsh McLennan, Aon, Allianz, and more. Our members returned to Wisconsin with new connections, fresh perspectives, and a renewed enthusiasm for the field!
Notable Speaker Events
RMIS also hosted several speaker events that provided members with a comprehensive view of risk management from various industry perspectives.
• Alumni Panel: We were excited to welcome back RMIS alumni Alfonso Tello, Anna Beyer, Michael Reeser, and Lauren Kelly to share their perspectives as early career professionals.
• Zurich/Marsh/United Event: Featuring Andy Nottestadt, Sam Boebel, Nathan Reyes, and Josh Berman, this event offered a deep dive into the roles of brokers, carriers, and corporate risk managers, enriching our understanding of how industry players work together.
• Milwaukee Brewers DEI Event: Our first-ever Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion event with Darius Johnson of the Milwaukee Brewers was a hit! Darius shared his experiences and strategies for fostering inclusivity within the industry, highlighting the importance of diverse perspectives.
• Goldman Sachs Event: Kennedy Stumpf from Goldman Sachs provided a compelling overview of risk and compliance, emphasizing the critical role these functions play in the financial sector and providing advice to RMIS students.
Step Challenge
To promote wellness and camaraderie, RMIS organized a step challenge. Members competed to log the most steps, with the winner earning the honor of pieing our Risk & Insurance Director, Carl Barlett, in the face. This event was a fantastic way to combine fitness, fun, and friendly competition, and it brought our community closer together.
RMIS Committees
This semester, we achieved the highest committee signups ever: a 130% increase. This surge in participation reflects the growing interest and enthusiasm among our members to get involved, contribute, and take on leadership roles within RMIS. Notable contributions by committees included the DEI committee hosting an open dialogue about DEI in the workplace, the Career Development committee creating a job board, and the Events Committee hosting a “Jeopardy!” social.
Looking Back and Looking Ahead
A huge thank you to all of our members, speakers, mentors, and supporters for making this semester a success. Stay tuned to hear how we keep this momentum going in the fall!
