WSB Impact Alumni Award: Will Hsu

The Wisconsin School of Business is proud to recognize Will Hsu (BBA ’00) with the WSB Impact Award.

This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated service to the Wisconsin School of Business, and have volunteered their time and talent to advance the school’s priorities.

Since graduating from UW–Madison—where he tripled-majored in finance, East Asian studies, and Chinese language and literature—Hsu has given back to his alma mater in countless ways. For over a decade, he has served on the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association Board of Directors, where he currently chairs the Budget and People Committee.

“When it comes to positive impact from UW–Madison alumni, it is difficult to imagine someone more broadly engaged than Will Hsu,” says Sarah Schutt, chief alumni officer and executive director of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. “A champion of student access and experience, Will brings creativity, passion, and insights that have shaped our organization’s work.”

Hsu has also served on the Wisconsin Alumni Association Board of Directors, the UW Advisory Board for the Wisconsin-China Initiative, and the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin. At WSB, he has supported students through his participation in the Weinert Center for Entrepreneurship’s Distinguished Entrepreneurs Lunch series, served on numerous panels, and supported the creation of the Wisconsin Business Scholars Alumni Scholarship Fund, a full-tuition scholarship modeled after a similar program Hsu benefited from as a student.

After his graduation from WSB, Hsu held several positions with General Mills and received his MBA from Harvard Business School. He would later return to his hometown of Wausau, Wisconsin, to join the family business his parents started in 1974. Now, as president of Hsu’s Ginseng Enterprises, Inc., he oversees the largest ginseng company in the United States. He is also a farmer and partner with Hsu Ginseng Farms, LLP, the second largest ginseng farming operation in the country.

Hsu was also a recipient of UW–Madison’s Forward Award in 2016 and Access to Education Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.

“Will also gives generously of his time and professional expertise, frequently welcoming alumni, visitors, and VIPs to his family’s ginseng farm and advocating for the state’s growers and residents of northern Wisconsin,” adds Schutt. “He is a treasured advisor and friend, and a fantastic representative of the alumni community.”

From the Dean

“It is impressive that on top of the many responsibilities that come with running a business, Will purposefully makes time for causes and organizations that are important to him, and we’re lucky that UW–Madison is high on that list. Whether it’s talking to students about entrepreneurship or trade relations affecting business today, Will generously shares his perspectives and expertise—a shining example of the Wisconsin Idea in action.”
