Experience in Africa Will Set You Apart – A New Course

By Katie Krueger, Senior Lecturer, Marketing

February 21, 2023

A new study abroad course is perfect for students who want to experience Africa, but are not able to commit to a full semester studying abroad. The course, MKT 365:  Society, Culture and Business in Senegal is a short course study abroad experience.  Students will take a 2-credit course in Fall 2023 learning about Senegal and preparing them for the trip. In January 2024, the class will travel to Senegal for a 10-day in-country experience.

The course will focus on how the culture of Senegal influences business there (private, public, and non-profit businesses) with a focus on the opportunities for growth. According to the International Trade Administration, “As a stable democracy with relatively advanced infrastructure and ambitious plans for expanding private investment, Senegal offers growing trade and investment opportunities for U.S. firms and an attractive location for companies looking to serve the West African regional market.”

A wide variety of topics will be explored, including history, culture, religious pluralism, business, social entrepreneurship, technology, and marketing. The in-country portion will enhance classroom knowledge with a mix of first-hand experiences including guest lectures from Senegalese local entrepreneurs, academics, and non-profit leaders, and field study that includes day-trips, company-visits, and community engagement.

The course is open to all UW-Madison students with at least sophomore standing.

There is an info session about the class on March 1, 2023 5:30pm 1270 Grainger Hall for students who want to learn more about the class or have questions.
