The Graduate Multicultural Business Association (GMBA) is a student organization with one simple goal and that is to promote cross-cultural understanding in a fun way! This year’s Co-Presidents are Deeptanshu Jha (DJ) and Jade Yeh, the Treasurer is Jorge Tefel, and I, Renita Clayton, hold the Communications Chair.
This month the GMBA presented its first solo event, “Get to Know Your Classmates.” This event focused on multicultural awareness and it featured seven 1st year students from the MBA class of 2022. The featured speakers were Daria Shcherbakova from Belarus, Folarin Ojo Omotoriogun from Nigeria, Baris Gezgen from Turkey, Amelie Von Below from Germany, Ngoc Tran from Vietnam, Michelle Cruz from Ecuador, and Kohta Kumazaki from Japan.

Did you know that “fresh air” is in your rental/housing contract in Germany (up to 3 times per day for 5 minutes each)? Did you know that the Russian language prevails in communication over Belarusian in Belarus? Did you know that kneeling to respect elders was a cultural norm in Nigeria? Did you know that the toilet industry is super competitive with its technology in Japan? Well, neither did we until now!
There were so many cool and insightful takeaways from the featured speakers and it was a blast to learn fun facts and history from each of the countries represented. Over 30 people attended this virtual presentation. If you were unable to attend, you certainly missed an interactive hour of engagement, but the good news is, we recorded it with you in mind. We hope to see you in the fall for part two of “Get to Know Your Classmates.” If you would like to be a featured speaker and present information on your home country, please attend our info session in the fall. There will be more details to follow, and we hope to see you there!
