When I started at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a freshman 3+ years ago, one thing that I was most impressed with was the Wisconsin School of Business. Specifically the Risk and Insurance Department and their annual Risk and Insurance Career Fair. This admiration remains until this day. On September 25, 2018, the Risk and Insurance Career Fair was once again orchestrated successfully, and this time I had the absolute pleasure of being a part of the organizing committee along with Jodi Wortsman, the Risk and Insurance Outreach Coordinator, and 8 other student coordinators.
The 2018 Risk and Insurance Career Fair held in Gordon Commons had the privilege of hosting 57 companies and 357 students. This career fair served as an effective platform to connect employers and students, specifically for actuarial science and risk management interests and positions. The smaller scale of the career fair, and its focus on the risk and insurance industry, gave both employers and students valuable opportunities to network and to get to know one another within a reasonable amount of time. I think I can speak on behalf of most students that having 57 great companies with positions in the risk and insurance industry in one location at one time is a fulfilled dream. I am sure this holds true for employers in the industry as well.
The 357 students who attended the career fair ranged from freshmen to seniors with MBA, PHD, Capstone, and alumni also included. That said, the attendees had different levels of experience and different goals and purpose at the career fair. Some students were there to gain experience at career fairs and put themselves out there, while others were there to secure internships and full-time positions. We also had students who volunteered to provide encouragement to younger students and for other roles that contributed to the overall success of the event. One other thing I believe added value to the student experience at the career fair was the presence of a number of Badger alumni who represented the different companies. Additionally, students were very grateful for the presence and encouragement of the wonderful Risk and Insurance faculty at the career fair.
Overall, just like every other Risk and Insurance Career Fair I have witnessed and experienced in the past 3 years, the 2018 Risk and Insurance Career Fair was indeed a success, and valuable to both students and employers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one who had contributed to this success, and I only hope that the future career fairs will be just as great or even better!
