Though even we could not have predicted what it would look like, the Actuarial Club is experiencing a successful, and unique, fall semester. With more than 250 active members, we are seeing encouraging levels of engagement with our virtual events, similar to our engagement with previous in-person events
We started the semester strong with our Virtual Fall Kickoff on September 14th. We not only introduced the club to our officers, faculty, and academic advisors, but also hosted breakout rooms with four to five members to foster connections with other students. Although we couldn’t have our traditional Ian’s Pizza together, our members still learned what the Actuarial Club was all about and met some fellow students along the way.
The same week, we helped students prepare for the Risk and Insurance Career Fair alongside the Risk Management and Insurance Society and the Risk and Insurance Department through a virtual career fair prep presentation. Completely student-led, the presentation helped prepare students to navigate a virtual career fair, alongside the typical “best practices” we usually share. After the presentation, the Actuarial Club Officers hosted breakout rooms where students could share their experiences and get their remaining questions answered.
This year, we are continuing two of our great successes from last year: leadership committees and the mentorship program. Leadership committees are officer-led groups of 4-5 students that provide our members with additional leadership opportunities through sharing their ideas and promoting engagement. With a whopping 35 applicants this year, we are happy to see our members taking advantage of this great opportunity. Additionally, we are continuing with our mentorship program, which is broken up into mentorship families. Each mentorship family has 5-6 members with varying levels of actuarial expertise. Both of these programs have increased our membership engagement in the past few years and help to develop young leadership within the club.
Having already held three employer presentations, a faculty research presentation, a social event, and a local blood drive, the Actuarial Club has adapted well to being a virtual organization. While we are looking forward to when we all can come together in person, we are doing everything we can to remain a strong community of aspiring actuaries within this virtual environment.
