WSB Student Groups’ Poster Sessions on the Sustainable Development of the City of Madison

Are you interested in learning more about sustainability and cities?  

Professor Yongheng Deng  and the students in his RE420 (Urban and Regional Economics) course partnered with the City of Madison to study and evaluate sustainable strategies and actions within the City’s Imagine Madison comprehensive plan.  On December 15th, 18 student groups will report their findings and recommendations about the City of Madison’s sustainable strategies and actions in a Poster Session in Grainger Hall.  Guests at the Poster Session will include staff of the Madison Mayor’s office, as well as visitors from mayors’ offices from other cities in the Dane County, the neighborhood and villages associations, and private developers who are committed or interested in sustainable development. Students will receive feedback on their research and presentations the City of Madison and neighborhood leaders and industry experts.

More about the course: During the semester, Professor Deng introduced the economic methods to analyze urban city and real estate markets. Topics covered include the determinants of real estate values, the location decisions of households and firms, land use, urban growth and agglomeration, real estate pricing, cycles, housing market and policies, and sustainable development. The goal was guide the students to take a holistic view of urban and housing economics, understand the social-economic challenges we face through the dynamic interaction between the real estate markets and urban, city, and neighborhoods, and learn how to tackle these problems. In addition, the guest speakers from the Mayor’s Office of the City of Madison, the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA), and others will give students guest lectures on the City of Madison’s sustainability and resilience plan, the affordable housing strategies, as well as the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
