Our corporate finance and investment banking students, along with Nicholas Center staff and alumni guests had the exciting privilege to meet David Brancaccio. Listeners of American Public Media’s Marketplace Morning Report or readers of his book “Squandering Aimlessly” will recognize the name. David is currently the host and senior editor of Marketplace Morning Report, which has one of the largest audiences in any medium. During our luncheon, David shared his career journey with us and talked about taking a career risk when necessary to gain the reward of a better job or access to a company. The students and alumni could definitely relate to this subject, all of them having left careers to obtain an MBA at the University of Wisconsin. The topics of discussion ranged from current events, i.e. the Trump administration’s plans to raise tariffs on all imported steel and aluminum, to a lively discussion on where the students stand on philanthropy.
Among the other topics discussed, David asked the students about the entrepreneurial climate in Madison. Second year students Jacob Smith, President of the Entrepreneurial Association and Matt Louison who has been involved in the entrepreneurial community for over three years gave valuable insights on raising capital, and the challenges and obstacles entrepreneurs face as they grow their businesses.
I usually start my day listening to Marketplace Morning Report… it was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have lunch with David Brancaccio.
