On September 12th, students studying actuarial science and risk management and insurance had the opportunity to network with sponsor companies of the Co-Curricular Learning Board (CCLB) at the CCLB fall picnic. Representatives from American Family Insurance, CUNA Mutual Group, Swiss Re, Travelers, and Milliman attended. The picnic provided a more innovative networking format: various outdoor games in the Grainger courtyard, and employer/student circles in the Executive Dining Room that were complete with an elegant spread of food. Key topics of conversation among circles included day-to-day professional work life, current events, and actuarial exam advice.
The picnic provided a truly exciting, genuine, and casual networking atmosphere for all risk and insurance students. I enjoyed hearing employers and students get to know one another over a game of bags or Jenga, which certainly isn’t the norm in networking settings, but doesn’t cease to prove more effective. The combined generosity of UW’s Risk & Insurance Department in joint with its CCLB partners certainly was in the spotlight in September, and deserves continued recognition as students and professionals continue to network through this fantastic partnership.
The objective of the CCLB is to generate opportunities for students to interact with business representatives, developing professional skills outside the classroom in an informal way.
