This year, Risk Management and Insurance Society (RMIS) has been focusing its efforts on increasing membership, coordinating joint events with other BBA student organizations such as Actuarial Club and Finance and Investment Society, and building a new committee structure that allows for more participation from general members.
To be an active member, students must attend three speaker events, two social events, and one volunteer event. This semester we have had speakers cover topics such as public entities underwriting, the behavioral economics of health insurance, and the state of the casualty insurance marketplace. Our upcoming speaker topics include discussions about integrated risk programs, systemic risks, and even a Q&A panel with our very own RMI department faculty!
So far the club has seen an amazing presence at all of our events, with our active dues-paying members up to 141 from last fall semester’s 80. This increase in number of members has made all of our events not only more highly attended than in previous years, but also more valuable in building knowledge and friendships.
One of the most fun events we have had thus far was the Halloween Game Night that we hosted jointly with Actuarial Club. Members played board games, card games, and video games while enjoying chicken wings and nachos. Additionally, everyone that showed up was entered into a raffle for some great prizes; those in costume were entered a second time. The best part about the joint event, though, was being able to see members from both organizations interacting with one another in an informal setting.
Lastly, RMIS has been experimenting with a new organizational structure in which each of our officers leads a committee of general members who want to gain RMIS leadership exposure without too much of a time commitment. Even though this has been the first semester of having the structure, we currently have five committees that each have at least five members. These committees have their own goals, such as expanding outreach through our mentorship program and compiling a booklet of scholarship opportunities for members.
Overall, RMIS is looking forward to maintaining such great numbers at its events, and is excited to pursue more joint events with other BBA organizations. It has been so much fun having the opportunity to interact with more members of the club through our numerous events as well as through the committees!
