Hire interns with real-world experiences and make early full-time employment offers.
Students typically complete internships in the summer.
Companies are invited to post their available internships year-round on Handshake.
To hire international students, your organization follows the same process as you would to hire any student. Most international students have an F-1 student visa, allowing them to work as interns during the summer or part-time during an academic semester. Students with internships can apply for work permission called Curricular Practical Training through UW–Madison’s International Student Services office.
Let us help you with logistics and meet your recruiting goals and hiring needs.

In the semester-long consulting project, corporate partners identify a business need and sponsor a team of students to find a solution.
Students provide consulting services and deliver actionable results for your organization. Students are supported in a variety of ways, including:
- instructors and teaching assistants with consulting and industry experience
- weekly meetings, regular progress reports, and presentation practice
- a consulting bootcamp where students learn crucial skills and frameworks
Show students what a day in the life of your company is like and introduce them to different career opportunities. Through these visits, Business Badgers shadow industry professionals to explore different workplace and company cultures. Career treks offer built-in networking for the students and you as an employer. With the in-person, on-site learning, you are able to showcase how your company is committed to making an impact.

Hire an international student as long as U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has granted work authorization.
Internships
Your organization follows the same process as you would to hire any student. Most international students have an F-1 student visa, allowing them to work as interns during the summer or part-time during an academic semester. Students with internships can apply for work permission called Curricular Practical Training through UW–Madison’s International Student Services office (ISS).
Full-time positions
International students studying on an F-1 visa may be authorized to work on Optional Practical Training for 12 months. Some students hold J-1 visas and can work in the U.S. for up to 18 months. Students work with ISS at UW–Madison to complete the paperwork.
Long-term employment
If your company would like to hire international students for long-term assignments in the U.S., you may sponsor them on H-1B visas. This visa allows up to six years of employment. More information can be found on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website.
