Building a Stronger Actuarial Community: From Unfamiliar Faces to Lifelong Connections

Earlier this month, another cohort of UW-Madison Actuaries proudly updated their LinkedIn status to Alumni. Reflecting on our achievements over the past year, from boosts in event attendance to exam pass results, it is the incredible sense of community that stands out the most.

This year, more frequently than ever, we witnessed students gathering in the Leadership and Engagement Lounge between and after classes to study, eat, and socialize. Activities like Bananagrams (a popular tile game similar to Scrabble) helped fuel this increase in community spirit and foster lasting friendships. Seeing the club grow into a community of both strong professionals and better friends has been incredibly rewarding. Moving into the future, I hope this trend of strong community continues.

The new officers and fellow club members will play a crucial role in ensuring this happens. Our new leadership team includes:
● President – Sarah Bloemer
● VP of Engagement – Aidan Bante
● VP of Educational Enrichment – Jodie Lam
● VP of Communications – Anthony Krebsbach
● VP of DEI – Stephanie Hayd
● VP of Finance – AC Zylka
● VP of Social Media – Ethan Farr

The Actuarial Club had a successful year full of exciting and unique events. Here is a quick
overview of those events:
● For Common Thread Gatherings, we held biweekly small group conversations on a wide variety of topics, the most notable of which was on mental health.
● We had 18 educational enrichment events, 10 social events, and 10 volunteering events, including a student panel that gave internship and exam advice to underclassmen, multiple hockey games, a board game social, and a food drive that donated 251 items for Porchlight.
● Along with an increase in attendance, our mentorship program had six structured events to ensure that under- and upperclass students were closely connected with one another.

Our communication improvements, including class slides, website updates, and the “Where are Madison Actuaries Going?” social media initiative has strengthened connections within our community. As we look to the future, we are excited to see how the new leadership will build on this foundation, fostering even greater connections among students and alumni. Together, we can continue to make the Actuarial Club a supportive community for all.
