‘Twas the night before my interview and all through the house,
Hung a freshly pressed blazer and even a blouse.
The wifi was checked by the laptop with care,
In hopes that my connection wouldn’t drop, don’t you dare!
My resume was printed and prepped, ready to go
I would stand out from the crowd, not be status quo.
For Wisconsin had prepped me and filled up my head
With great technique and STAR stories that I no longer dread.
I networked and did mock interviews galore,
So during this interview I would not be a bore.
Gone are the days of plane tickets and travel
Just try to manage your time and not to unravel.
Companies have moved to virtual, don’t you see?
It’s the new communication for you and for me.
Either WebEx, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams
A face-to-face meeting is just in our dreams.
Online coffee chats, info sessions, and interviews are new norms,
You’ll need to make sure you have all the right platforms.
Applications are similar to the way they’ve always gone,
Research and cover letters as the charge continues on.
We find postings through websites, LinkedIn, and Handshake,
Can seem like a daunting task, too big to undertake.
But with the help of the career center and generous alumni,
We build connections and contacts and give applying a try.
We might not hear back but we keep moving ahead
Hoping for no “nos” (a small word we now dread).
But then one day, LO! An interview invite!
Onto more research and practice to nail this just right.
The living room is cleaned and lighting is bright
Need the sound to be clear and be very polite.
These badgers nail interviews, oh what a day!
Will there be a second round? We keep the nerves at bay.
Some might be “yeses” and some might be “nos”
We keep doing our best just to see how it goes.
Time will tell all if we land the big gig
I’m with BP headed to an oil rig.
While this year has been quite different, we keep moving ahead
Helping each other, letting job openings spread.
It’s not quite what we pictured coming into this year,
But we’ve made the best of it to kick into gear.
It’s made us resilient, flexible, and more,
UW has made sure we can open the door
To new careers and experiences all around town
You can be sure that these badgers are the last to back down!
