On Thursday, September 12th, the University of Wisconsin Real Estate Club had its first meeting of the 2019-20 school year. The University of Wisconsin has the oldest undergraduate and graduate Real Estate programs in the Country with the Real Estate Club, established back in 1970. As one of the largest student-run organizations on campus, the meeting did not disappoint, with over 200 attendees. A unique part of the Real Estate Club is the dynamic participation of undergraduates, MBA students, as well as Global Real Estate Masters (GREM) students.
The meeting began with a networking reception which offered club members a chance to reconnect after a long summer, and fill up on food and beverages. Club Co-Presidents, Jared Schnoll and Andrew Evans, kicked off the meeting by introducing the guest speakers. A panel discussion about the Real Estate Career Fair was led by guest speakers Mark Eppli, Director of the James A. Graaskamp Center; Greg Reed, Associate Director of the James A. Graaskamp Center; and Zach Pagel, National Real Estate Representative at McDonald’s. The three discussed how mentor programs, internships, coursework, and class projects can help students prepare for going to work post-graduation. Being engaged in school and work, and finding passion in these two can help increase the likelihood of well-being. All three collectively discussed how to prepare for the career fair by making a great first impression to employers, and researching one’s preferred companies beforehand to show interest to employers. Treating the support staff/cleaning crew the same as the CEO, and checking one’s social media privacy settings are both very important in building a good reputation for employers. Leveraging classroom knowledge and previous work experiences can also be a great tool for discussion when engaging with employers. The discussion was very interactive as several members had constructive questions and observations.
The Real Estate Club has several fun events and trips planned for the semester, featuring a Club trip to Denver, CO, and other distinguished speakers from the Real Estate Industry. The Real Estate Club fall trip will take place on October 23-25. The Wisconsin Real Estate Club will be taking a national trip to network, meet with professionals, and learn about a new real estate market. The Real Estate Career Fair took place on September 16th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Union South Varsity Hall. Over 45 employers from the real estate industry were present to talk with students about their companies, career advice, and available job opportunities. The Real Estate Club‘s next meeting will be on October 10th from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Pyle Center.
